Job description

Role Overview

Manchester City Council is seeking a dedicated Caretaker to join its Mobile Caretaking service, ensuring the upkeep and safety of communal residential buildings across North Manchester. This permanent, full-time position contributes significantly to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, health and safety compliance, and resident satisfaction within multiple high-rise blocks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver thorough cleaning and janitorial services across all communal areas, including landings, stairs, lifts, bin chutes, store rooms, and bin rooms.
  • Maintain buildings and external communal spaces such as gardens and car parks, ensuring timely management and follow-up of repairs.
  • Oversee health and safety compliance by conducting risk assessments, routine safety checks, and escalating any concerns appropriately.
  • Serve as a responsible key holder, managing building security and reporting antisocial behavior incidents to the housing team.
  • Regularly inspect service areas including lifts, communal entrances, stairs, and machinery rooms, while maintaining accurate safety documentation.
  • Liaise with repair contractors via the Customer Contact Centre to ensure efficient resolution of maintenance requests, especially for vulnerable residents.
  • Act as a primary contact for residents, providing assistance and directing queries to relevant services when necessary.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Perform physically demanding manual tasks, which include walking and standing for extended periods.
  • Maintain strong customer service skills and collaborate with colleagues, stakeholders, and partner agencies.

Occasional use of a personal vehicle for council business may be necessary, with a casual car allowance provided per mile driven. A valid full driving licence and relevant documentation are mandatory. The position is subject to medical clearance, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, and compliance with employment and safety guidelines.
