Caretaker

Role overview

Police Scotland is looking for a Caretaker to support the day-to-day running of allocated buildings. The role involves carrying out tasks assigned by the Facilities Officer or Senior Caretaker to help maintain a safe, secure and well-kept environment for staff and visitors. Work may include maintenance support, porterage, cleaning and general security duties.

Contract and working pattern

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract based at the Edinburgh Fettes site. The normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00.

Key duties

• Spot defects or faults in buildings, complete minor repairs where possible, or escalate issues to the Facilities Officer or Senior Caretaker.
• Respond appropriately to emergency building situations so that the estate remains maintained and safe for use.
• Carry out daily checks of plant and plant rooms to confirm that heating, ventilation and hot water systems are operating effectively.
• Make sure lighting, alarm systems, water systems and sanitary installations are kept in good working order and repaired when needed.
• Collect confidential waste, store it securely, shred it safely and arrange transfer for disposal at approved locations.
• Keep entrances and car parks in satisfactory condition, including clearing snow and gritting paths and roads when required.
• Help ensure refuse operatives can access the premises when necessary.
