About the Role

The Building Supervisor will oversee the activities of the Assistant Building Supervisor and cleaning staff as necessary. The role requires managing on-site supervision, cleaning, and related services according to policies set forth by the Education Authority. The position reports directly to the School Principal.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure security of the entire premises, including school meals areas, by managing access, locking/unlocking doors and windows, and controlling keys.
  • Manage security systems including alarms and surveillance cameras, respond to incidents such as break-ins, and report suspicious activity promptly.
  • Maintain mechanical and electrical systems—operating boilers, heating, lighting, and monitoring utilities usage, along with routine maintenance and fuel requisitioning.
  • Carry out cleaning duties personally and supervise cleaning staff to meet Education Authority standards, ensuring all inside and outside surfaces, drains, bins, and grounds are kept tidy and safe.
  • Coordinate porterage tasks such as receiving and distributing supplies and preparing rooms for various uses including examinations and after-school activities.
  • Handle administration involving reports, maintenance requests, contractor oversight, and record-keeping related to cleaning supplies, equipment, and staff attendance.
  • Perform handyperson tasks within the scope of the role as needed.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Minimum six months paid experience as an assistant building supervisor, building supervisor, caretaker, or cleaner in an organized setting.
  • Experience supervising staff teams effectively.
  • Ability to act as a key holder, responding to urgent call outs including during unsociable hours.
  • Good knowledge of health and safety standards relevant to building supervision, manual handling, and security procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, planning, administrative, and decision-making skills.
  • Competence in various handyperson duties applicable to indoor and outdoor school environments.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience with key holding duties such as alarm system operation and premises locking/unlocking.
  • Familiarity with cleaning or industrial machinery like power washers or floor polishers.
  • NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work qualification or equivalent/higher certification.
