Job description

Role Overview

The Assistant Director (Capability & Industry) serves as a strategic and operational leader focusing on consultancy, applied research, intellectual property, and industry engagement within the School of Technology for Arts, Media & Design. The position involves formulating and executing strategies that enhance staff capabilities, expand consultancy and research activities, and increase the School's impact beyond traditional creative sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives in consultancy, applied research, and industry outreach to amplify the School’s external engagements and impact.
  • Develop and implement organizational strategies, policies, and frameworks supporting sustainable growth and measurable results.
  • Address complex challenges by integrating interdisciplinary approaches from creative, arts, design, and media fields aligned with industry needs.
  • Direct identification, structuring, and delivery of consultancy and research projects, including intellectual property creation with government and non-creative industry partners.
  • Seek and nurture collaborative projects leveraging expertise in digital media, immersive experiences, design-led innovation, and facilitation methodologies.
  • Enhance consultancy methodologies and service excellence to maximize intellectual property output and revenue streams.
  • Mentor and build staff competencies in consultancy, applied research, and professional practices across the School.
  • Lead skill development programs and promote interdisciplinary teamwork to close capability gaps.
  • Establish and sustain strategic partnerships with corporates, agencies, research institutions, and solution providers.
  • Influence academic and organizational leadership to adopt innovative approaches and secure advantageous partnerships.
  • Coordinate interdepartmental efforts, manage dependencies, and optimize outcomes through autonomous decision-making and sound judgment.

Candidate Profile

  • Educational background in arts, media, design, creative technologies, business, engineering, or related fields.
  • Extensive experience in business development, industry partnerships, consultancy, applied research, or innovation.
  • Proven track record in developing capabilities, growing consultancy, fostering applied research, intellectual property creation, industry interaction, and stakeholder collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate creative and design strengths into effective industry solutions beyond traditional arts sectors.
  • Experience in designing and supporting tailored solutions in areas such as arts, digital media, and immersive experiences.
  • Strong skills in stakeholder influence, negotiation, and driving organizational change across complex environments.
  • Capacity to work independently and confidently under ambiguity, exercising accountability and sound judgment.
