About the Opportunity
Northeastern University is hiring an Academic Advisor for the Explore Program to support students who have not yet declared a major. In this role, you will offer individualized, student-centered guidance as learners clarify their academic interests, plan their coursework, and move toward a major. You will also create and run exploratory programming that connects students with faculty, peers, and information about academic options across the university.
The position also serves prospective and deposited students and their families by helping connect them with the right advising and student leadership resources. This support contributes to student recruitment and retention efforts.
Academic Advising Responsibilities
- Guide undeclared students through their first- and second-year exploration so they can better understand academic and career directions.
- Explain academic rules, procedures, major requirements, and NUpath requirements through in-person, virtual, and email communication.
- Create first-semester class schedules for incoming students who have not declared a major.
- Offer course-planning guidance based on knowledge of the university’s first-year curriculum so students stay on a timely path to graduation.
- Spot students who may fall behind on graduation progress and help them address academic or personal challenges.
Programs, Events, and Campus Support
- Plan and deliver events that help students choose the major that best fits their goals and interests.
- Teach one or more sections of the first-year seminar, FSEM1000: Connections and Decisions, during the fall and spring terms, including workshops on Northeastern processes.
- Help design and carry out summer orientation programming for incoming students.
- Partner on admissions events such as Welcome Days, NU Preview Days, webinars for prospective students and families, Visitor Center programming, and new student orientation presentations.
- Support departmental communication and marketing so undeclared students know about the resources available to them as they work toward declaring a major.
Qualifications
A master’s degree is preferred, ideally in counseling, human services, or higher education. Candidates should have at least two years of relevant work or academic experience, with higher education experience being especially desirable. The role is best suited to someone who enjoys supporting first-year students as they adjust to university life.
Strong candidates will bring effective communication skills, counseling ability grounded in development theory, respect for confidentiality, strong written and spoken communication, and solid proficiency with Excel and Word. The role also calls for attention to detail, precision, public speaking confidence, teamwork, goal-setting ability, multitasking, and time management.
Work Arrangement
This is an on-site position based at Northeastern’s Boston campus. The selected candidate is expected to work in person five days each week.
