Job description
Role Overview
The Youth Worker is responsible for supervising and supporting young individuals involved in youth justice interventions. This role operates under the guidance of the Program Coordinator to ensure effective delivery of services tailored to young people's needs.
Key Duties
- Exhibit and develop cultural capabilities aligned with the Human Rights Act 2019, fostering an inclusive environment that respects and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through departmental and community partnerships.
- Implement elements of core programs, working independently or collaboratively to uphold the Service Response Plan formulated by Youth Justice Caseworkers.
- Offer supervision and assistance to young participants, guaranteeing adherence to quality service standards as per legislation, statutory delegations, and departmental policies and best practice guidelines.
- Engage with various stakeholders—including government agencies, community organizations, service providers, and families—to facilitate young people's access to services and bolster their support networks in line with their service response plans.
- Provide culturally sensitive supervision and family support to aid young people’s compliance with bail conditions, court mandates, and their community reintegration strategies.
- Collaborate constructively within multidisciplinary teams comprising internal and external members to enhance casework and management outcomes.
- Continuously update role-relevant knowledge and actively participate in professional development activities.
- Maintain clear, accessible case documentation consistent with departmental standards to support planning and review meetings.
- Support the Program Coordinator or Team Coordinator by assisting in developing work rosters tailored to young people under supervised orders or bail arrangements.
- Conduct safety audits of program sites and equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards and to facilitate secure program delivery.
- Engage in ongoing training to ensure services adhere to youth justice best practices.
- Consistently demonstrate and commit to enhancing cultural capabilities to sustain an inclusive workplace culture.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Understanding of the impact of historical and current policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, paired with the ability to respectfully engage with these communities.
- Proven skills in swiftly gaining proficiency with organisational programs and databases, alongside foundational knowledge of cultural and social issues affecting Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and other diverse groups.
- Awareness of the traditions, cultures, and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to ensure respectful and culturally sensitive interactions.
Mandatory Criteria
- Possession of a valid unrestricted Queensland driver’s license.
- Encouragement to submit a referee who is Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
- Hold a current Blue Card clearance.
- Successful completion of pre-employment screenings, including criminal and disciplinary history checks.
- Disclosure of any pre-existing medical conditions.
