Yard Supervisor

Role overview

This position is responsible for directing the daily activities of an open storage yard that handles passenger vehicles, breakbulk shipments, and project cargo. The role focuses on safe cargo movement, efficient use of yard space, prompt dispatch, and full compliance with port and HSSE requirements.

Key duties

• Manage the day-to-day flow of yard operations, including receiving, storing, shifting, and releasing cargo.
• Oversee the handling of passenger vehicles for import, export, and transit movement.
• Supervise breakbulk cargo such as steel and machinery, as well as project cargo including heavy-lift and oversized consignments.
• Organize yard layout and space assignment to keep storage efficient and stacking orderly.
• Separate different cargo categories appropriately, with special care for high-value items.
• Track cargo movement and work closely with equipment operators and stevedores.
• Keep inbound and outbound gate processes running smoothly.
• Coordinate the allocation and deployment of handling equipment such as forklifts, cranes, and trailers.
• Ensure cargo is lashed, secured, and protected correctly during handling and storage.
• Oversee loading and unloading activities according to cargo handling plans.
• Monitor cargo condition throughout movement and storage to reduce the risk of damage.
• Apply Health, Safety, Security and Environmental standards consistently across yard operations.
• Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings for yard personnel.
• Follow port rules and company procedures at all times.
• Spot hazards early and drive corrective and preventive action.
• Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe situations without delay.
• Maintain accurate yard inventory records for cars, breakbulk, and project cargo.
• Track the location, status, and movement of cargo within the yard.
• Carry out physical stock counts and resolve any mismatches in records.
• Make sure all cargo is properly tagged, marked, and documented.
• Handle cargo receipt, delivery, and transfer paperwork accurately.
• Keep daily logs, shift reports, and summaries of yard activity up to date.
• Coordinate regularly with documentation, operations, and customs teams.
• Prepare reports on yard usage, cargo volumes, and overall operational performance.
• Work with port authorities, shipping agents, transporters, and internal stakeholders.
• Coordinate with vessel operations teams for timely loading and discharge of cargo.
• Support customers by ensuring cargo is ready and delivered on time.
• Address operational issues proactively to minimize delays.

Qualifications and experience

• A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Maritime studies, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Between 5 and 8 years of experience in yard or terminal operations is required.
• Practical exposure to breakbulk, Ro-Ro vehicle handling, and project cargo operations is expected.
• Experience in UAE ports, especially Khorfakkan or similar terminals, will be considered an advantage.

Additional requirements

• The role requires the ability to work in an outdoor yard environment and remain physically fit for the job.
• Basic computer proficiency, including MS Excel and reporting tools or systems, is needed.
• A valid UAE driving licence is an added advantage.
