Water Regulations Officer

About the role

The Water Regulations and Standards Section supports the Bureau’s core responsibilities under the Water Act 2007 and the Water Regulations 2008, with a focus on national water information collection, management and sharing. The team plays a regulatory role that balances efficient data provision, low compliance burden and public access to useful water data.

Working as a national, independent body, the Bureau partners across jurisdictions to support water reform, provide leadership in national water information, and help standardise and harmonise water data across Australia.

This position contributes to the administration of the Commonwealth Water Regulations 2008 and the national standards for water information. It helps ensure that Australia’s water data is governed in a way that supports informed decision-making and delivers clear value to the community.

Key responsibilities

The officer will help monitor regulatory practices and maintain procedures, policies and guidelines so that activities remain compliant with relevant legislation and governance requirements.

The role also involves building strong working relationships with data providers and data users, while contributing to a trusted network across regulators, policy teams and regulated entities.

In addition, the position supports internal understanding and engagement across the Bureau so that regulatory responsibilities are delivered effectively. This includes working with technical specialists and subject matter experts to identify where Bureau capabilities can better align with national water data and information needs.
