Role overview
Hume City Council is seeking an undergraduate civil engineer for a paid work experience placement. This opportunity runs for 12 weeks, from 23 November 2026 to 19 February 2027, and involves 38 hours per week in a paid casual role with superannuation included. The position is based in Broadmeadows, Victoria.

Students will gain practical exposure across multiple engineering areas, including traffic engineering, civil design, project planning, asset management, and infrastructure delivery.
Key duties
- Support work in traffic engineering, civil design, asset engineering, infrastructure delivery, and project planning.
- Develop design work for a wide range of engineering projects.
- Use CAD tools while following the relevant design standards.
- Assess issues, investigate options, and contribute practical engineering solutions.
- Prepare estimates for engineering works.
- Draft tender documentation, including schedules, specifications, and contract papers.
- Handle applications received from service authorities.
Skills and experience
- Exposure to or understanding of traffic engineering, civil design, project management, construction supervision, and asset management systems.
- Ability to organise work, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for working with different stakeholders.
- General computer literacy, with engineering software knowledge viewed favourably.
- Capability to use engineering software, including computer-aided design tools.
- Prior work experience outside engineering will also be considered an advantage.
Qualifications
- Applicants should be penultimate-year students in a Civil Engineering degree, although students in their final year in 2026 and other year levels may also be considered.
- A current driver’s licence is required.
