Train Driver (Emiratized) - Trainee

Position Overview

The Trainee Driver role is designed to prepare future train drivers through a combination of classroom-based learning and hands-on practical training. The position calls for strong concentration, the ability to work independently, and a clear understanding of the responsibility that comes with operating trains.

The job also requires a high level of safety awareness and the confidence to handle demanding situations and emergencies. Alongside this, the role expects strong teamwork, regular communication with the Control function, and consistently excellent customer service.

Work will follow a rotating shift pattern, providing 24/7 operational coverage. Training will be extensive, covering train operations across the UAE network. Candidates must meet required medical standards for health and safety, including specific vision and hearing criteria. A psychometric assessment is also required for the position.

Roles and Responsibilities Once Qualified

• Support safe working practices and help maintain a secure environment for employees and contractors working on Etihad Rail DB infrastructure.
• Operate trains safely, reliably, and on time in both normal and disrupted operating conditions, following the Etihad Rail DB Safety Management System.
• Help create and deliver plans that build the skills and knowledge of new joiners.
• Spot, log, and respond to irregular events such as equipment issues or failures.
• Share live updates with the Train Operations Supervisor on operational performance and safety matters.
• Coordinate with customer facility staff where needed to support safe, reliable, and punctual service.
• Assist in training and developing newcomers to the rail industry.
• Keep train driver competence up to date.
• Perform shunting and train preparation tasks as needed to support maintenance and service schedules.
• Work within a flexible shift arrangement as assigned by the business.

Qualifications and Skills

Applicants should hold either a Bachelor’s degree or a High School certificate. Helpful background knowledge includes OHS standards, the European Train Control System (ETCS), and competence management systems. Strong planning ability, basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems, solid English communication skills, and the ability to produce detailed reports are also important.

Additional Requirements

The role requires good medical fitness, the ability to complete psychometric evaluation successfully, and either a full UAE driving licence or the ability to achieve the required competence. Candidates should also be analytical, IT literate, and capable of solving problems effectively.
