Job description

Overview

National Highways is seeking Traffic Officers to join their team at the Bescot Outstation (WS1 4NL) in Walsall, England. The role involves managing incidents on the strategic road network to maintain safety and efficiency. Traffic Officers respond to events such as collisions and debris removal while delivering excellent customer service as part of a collaborative team.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and respond promptly to incidents on motorways and major A roads using effective measures including traffic management deployment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, emergency services, and stakeholders to quickly resolve issues and ensure road user safety.
  • Utilize communication tools such as radios and mobile phones to provide accurate, timely updates from incident scenes.
  • Take personal accountability for safety by identifying and mitigating unsafe behaviors or situations.
  • Maintain detailed records of vehicles, equipment, and activities related to incident management.

Work Schedule

This position requires working a rotating 24/7 schedule with six consecutive workdays followed by three days off. Shifts include early (6am–2:26pm), late (2pm–10:26pm), cover shifts (may vary), and night shifts (10pm–6:26am).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must hold a full driving licence with no more than three penalty points; driving is a mandatory part of the role.
  • Residency within one hour's commuting distance from the job location is required.
  • Experience driving on motorways.
  • Awareness and contribution to workplace safety protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality customer service.
  • Self-driven and capable of working effectively both independently and as a team member.

Additional Information

  • Starting salary is up to £36,262.50, comprising base pay plus a 25% shift allowance. This increases to £37,762.50 after a 9-month probationary period.
