Overview

Riot engineers combine specialized technical expertise with versatility across diverse domains. The role of Staff Software Engineer, Console, is pivotal in directing console-related development for an exciting new Riot game still in the research and development phase. Collaborating closely with teams in engineering, quality assurance, art, and design, you will ensure the game delivers exceptional quality and creativity across multiple platforms. This hands-on position involves developing core game features, integrating console-specific functionality, perfecting the gamepad experience, and meeting certification standards. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager in the Tech Foundations team, you will employ cutting edge technology to create innovative player experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with QA, engineers, designers, and artists to align the console version of the game with technical, creative, and artistic goals
  • Analyze and resolve complex console-specific technical challenges
  • Conduct performance profiling and memory optimization tailored to console platforms
  • Incorporate first-party console platform features into the game
  • Lead compliance with technical certification requirements on all console platforms
  • Contribute to planning and execution of console engineering tasks including requirements gathering, technical research, task breakdown, and estimation
  • Promote and advance engineering best practices relating to maintainable code, quality standards, monitoring, peer reviews, and documentation
  • Mentor newer engineers joining the team and support their professional development through constructive feedback

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of delivering live or released products at scale
  • At least 3 years working specifically on console game development
  • Proven experience releasing titles on one or more console platforms
  • Expertise in console performance profiling and optimization techniques
  • Background in implementing Technical Certification Requirements (TCRs/TRCs) for console platforms
  • Ability to independently navigate ambiguity and solve complex problems
  • Strong cross-disciplinary teamwork and communication skills for varied technical and non-technical audiences
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

Preferred Skills

  • Background in developing multiplayer games
  • Experience porting or implementing UI systems on console platforms
  • Implemented gamepad input handling for console games
  • Knowledge of input handling frameworks such as Common UI or Enhanced Input
  • Familiarity with graphics and rendering techniques

Salary & Location

This full-time role is located onsite in the Greater Sydney Area. The base salary range is between 173500 and 260200 Australian Dollars annually.
