Position Overview

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated nurses to join the Squirrel Gastro Ward team at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. This ward specializes in gastroenterology care for children and young people, providing high-quality nursing to a complex patient population ranging from newborns to 18 years of age.

Work Environment and Opportunities

The Squirrel Gastro Ward is a dynamic 10-bed unit focusing on acute and long-term gastroenterological treatments. Nurses will gain experience in complex fluid management, parental nutrition, gastrointestinal investigations, pre-transplant assessments for bowel or multi-visceral transplants, and managing complex medication regimens for inflammatory bowel disease. As a nationally recognized center, the ward cares for patients regionally, nationally, and occasionally internationally.

Primary Duties

  • Deliver top-tier nursing care for children, young people, and their families at all times.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans, including supervising other staff during these processes.
  • Maintain a welcoming, safe, and caring ward environment for patients and visitors.
  • Supervise and support ward team members to ensure consistent, appropriate patient care.
  • Administer medical treatments as prescribed and keep the multidisciplinary team updated on patient condition changes.
  • Assist in the teaching and practical training of learners and junior staff, cooperating with universities to uphold professional standards.
  • Engage in both formal and informal educational activities.
  • Protect confidentiality concerning patient admissions and treatments at all times.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of all patient documentation in accordance with nursing and clinical standards.
  • Adhere to ward and Trust policies and professional standards, encouraging colleagues to do the same.

Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

We strive to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities, disabled individuals, and LGBTQ+ community members. Our hospital fosters an inclusive environment supported by staff networks such as REACH, ENABLED, PRIDE, and Women’s networks, all sponsored by executive leadership. We are dedicated to ensuring all staff feel valued and heard.
