Job description

Overview

The New Zealand Customs Service is dedicated to safeguarding the country through superior border management. The Customs Surveillance Unit (CSU) plays a critical role by collaborating with domestic and international agencies to offer specialized surveillance services. This unit focuses on combating organised crime, preventing illegal drug importation, tackling financial crimes, and addressing child exploitation. CSU works closely with technical and investigation teams to dismantle international crime syndicates and secure convictions against offenders.

Role Summary

As a Senior Customs Officer Grade 2 in the Surveillance Unit, you will provide expert surveillance support for probing various border offenses. You must operate effectively under stress, adapt quickly to changing situations, and have a strong affinity for technology. The role requires adherence to operational directives and sound decision-making capabilities.

The position demands availability for unpredictable and extended working hours. Due to the national scope of the role, you may be required to deploy at short notice and stay away from home for prolonged periods. Candidates should discuss these demands with their family or support network. Despite these challenges, the role offers some flexibility tied to operational needs. The position is based in Auckland; willingness to relocate is necessary if not already living nearby.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver advanced surveillance support to aid investigations related to border offenses.
  • Lead, mentor, and coach junior surveillance officers, including assisting with training and assessments.
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understand and apply relevant legislation related to surveillance operations.
  • Supervise and manage surveillance teams during training and operational deployments, making decisive commands to meet intelligence and operational goals.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support the professional growth of team members.

Candidate Profile

  • Completion of the Customs Surveillance Course.
  • Proven experience as a surveillance officer with leadership abilities in operations and mentorship.
  • Possession of a full and unrestricted New Zealand driver's license.
  • Availability to work irregular hours, including extended shifts and on-call rosters.
  • Preparedness for rapid deployment anywhere in New Zealand.
  • Capability to pass surveillance skills assessments, fitness tests, drug screenings, and medical examinations.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain organizational and Top Secret security clearances, which require a verifiable 10-year background check in countries with reliable records.

Additional Details

Applicants must be aware that acquiring a high-level security clearance may not be possible if necessary background checks cannot be performed. The hiring process includes a comprehensive online application featuring motivation and competency questions, and shortlisted candidates will undertake psychometric evaluations. Applications close at 5pm on Monday 24th August 2026.

Employer Commitment

The New Zealand Customs Service values diversity and inclusivity, actively promoting equal employment opportunities and supporting flexible work arrangements.
