Job description
Job Overview
This role involves assisting in all activities related to the collection, processing, distribution, and storage of human blood and its components for transfusion. A key function is ensuring that procedures comply with defined quality limits through quality control checks of blood, its components, equipment, reagents, and methodologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct interviews, selection procedures, and testing of blood donors.
- Carry out collection and processing of donor blood, preparing components such as packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrate, and cryoprecipitate.
- Manage selection of blood components, perform pre-transfusion and compatibility testing, and issue blood components accordingly.
- Operate apheresis devices including Optia for red cell and therapeutic plasma exchange, and Trima for platelet collection.
- Document, evaluate, detect, and report transfusion-related complications.
- Perform advanced serological testing including blood grouping, antibody screening and identification, warm absorption, acid elution, Rh phenotyping, Coombs tests, antibody titers, cold agglutinin tests, Apt’s tests, HIT testing, and ABO-Rh verification.
- Execute daily, weekly, and monthly quality control on tube reagents, gel cards, DayMate S reagents, and blood components.
- Conduct cleaning, maintenance, and decontamination of machines and instruments.
- Review blood donor screening results and manage deferrals.
- Carry out Nucleic Acid Amplification Technique (NAT) testing for donors, including machine maintenance and quality control.
- Manage blood component system operations such as defragging and ISBT labeling.
- Relay critical results according to policy requirements.
- Report occurrences and variances through system or manual documentation.
- Provide education to patients and families about health conditions, treatments, and preventative measures as applicable.
- Perform additional duties such as proficiency testing and compliance with national and international accreditation standards.

Qualification and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Science, or related fields such as Chemical or Biological Sciences.
- 0 to 3 years of practical experience as a Medical Technologist in a Blood Bank setting.
- Licensure to practice from relevant regional health regulatory authorities (e.g., SCFHS, DHA).
- Fluent proficiency in both written and spoken English and Arabic.
- Proficient computer skills and a self-motivated attitude with a strong sense of responsibility.
