Introduction
This is a repost of the Public Defender Intake Specialist I role at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender (MOPD). Previous applicants do not need to apply again. Applicants must possess strong communication skills to interact with clients and visitors, and be able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment across various settings including public defender offices, jails, detention centers, prisons, and courts. Candidates must be proficient with computer and office equipment and have reliable transportation or access to public transit. Location and Position Details
The position is based at 200 Kent Ave, Suite 102, LaPlata, MD 20646, with occasional travel between offices, courthouse, and detention center for client interviews. The position is grade ASTD8 and requires intermediate level work to determine client eligibility for public defender representation and gather initial client data to prepare case files. This role reports to a Public Defender Intake Specialist Supervisor or administrator and does not involve supervisory responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients interacting with the Office of the Public Defender.
- Maintain professionalism and demonstrate empathy and effective people skills at all times.
- Create client files for attorneys, prepare and mail assignment letters to clients and attorneys.
- File entries of appearance with courts and manage data entry tasks.
- Answer phones, greet visitors, retrieve and input data, organize case files, and assist with discovery processing.
- Provide support to colleagues as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent certificate.
- At least six months of experience interviewing individuals to obtain and verify background or financial information.
Substitution Options: Candidates can substitute additional relevant interviewing experience on a year-for-year basis for the education requirement, or 60 college credit hours in lieu of required experience. Military service as a non-commissioned officer in relevant fields may also substitute for experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in data entry and experience with fast-paced retail or office environments.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Interest in working with indigent defendants and families.
- Experience with Maryland Electronic Courts (MDEC) documents.
Licenses and Certifications
Employees assigned vehicle operation duties must hold a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator's license.
Selection and Examination Process
Candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be admitted to a rating-based examination assessing education, training, and experience. Qualified candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment list for at least one year.
