Job Summary

Wood is seeking a Principal Technical Safety Engineer to join our team in Doha, Qatar on a permanent basis. This pivotal role involves contributing expertise across study phases, FEED, EPC, and PMC scopes within both brownfield and greenfield oil and gas projects, including onshore and offshore environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of Technical Safety and Loss Prevention engineering principles, tools, and software relevant to FEED, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and plant start-up stages.
  • Conduct safety screenings and analyze existing safety arrangements to assess adequacy and identify gaps.
  • Lead hazardous area classification, safety layout assessments, and emergency escape route evaluations.
  • Perform fire engineering tasks such as fire zone determination, firewater demand calculations, and hydraulic network analysis.
  • Prepare third-party scopes of work, evaluate bids, and coordinate post-award safety and environmental workshops.
  • Participate in and generate reports for HAZOP, HAZID, SIL, and other safety studies.
  • Execute physical hazard modeling and review quantitative risk assessments.
  • Conduct flame and gas mapping activities.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design development, construction, pre-commissioning, and start-up activities.
  • Provide on-site technical support as required.
  • Produce and review specifications, data sheets, schedules, study reports, and design calculations, ensuring alignment with quality, competence, and project management standards.
  • Engage as a client-facing leader, maintaining clear communication and building trust through formal and informal interactions.
  • Drive delivery to meet project timelines and milestones.
  • Mentor and lead junior engineers.
  • Assume full responsibility for technical safety deliverables.
  • Stay current with applicable regulations, industry standards, legislative changes, and technological advancements.
  • Maintain awareness of international codes and standards, with strong preference for familiarity with Shell Design Engineering Practices (DEP).
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and maintain competency standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering; professional membership in a relevant institution preferred.
  • At least 15 years of experience post-graduation within the oil and gas sector.
  • Diverse project experience across greenfield and brownfield sites, onshore and offshore, from concept through EPC, primarily focused on upstream operations.
  • Self-driven with strong initiative, excellent communication skills, and solid organizational insight.
  • Proven ability to influence colleagues and foster teamwork.
  • Customer-focused approach aligned with achieving project and corporate goals.
  • Strong analytical, innovative skills for managing emerging technologies.
  • Experience leading or chairing HAZID and HAZOP sessions for smaller projects considered an asset.
