Principal Engineer - Water (Wastewater)

WSP is seeking a senior technical leader to join its Auckland Water team and provide expert guidance across water and wastewater infrastructure work. This position is suited to someone with a strong background in delivering complex projects and a track record of turning planning-stage ideas into construction-ready outcomes. The role calls for a specialist who can combine technical depth with leadership, helping shape solutions that deliver value for clients and communities.

What you will do

• Prepare technical studies, plans, and reports, and contribute to public consultation and engagement activities.
• Provide strategic technical input across multiple projects and advise clients on technical matters when needed.
• Act as an emerging technical authority in water and wastewater, with emphasis on large pipelines, trenchless installation, pump stations, and underground structures.
• Support project and proposal work by adding technical expertise and practical input.
• Lead the design of projects and programmes through regular design direction and problem-solving.
• Develop practical, future-focused solutions that balance client needs, community outcomes, quality, and cost effectiveness.
• Coordinate and deliver design packages on schedule and to a standard that is fit for purpose.

What the employer is looking for

• At least 7 years of professional experience in infrastructure, water, or wastewater roles.
• A recognised tertiary qualification.
• CPEng status or an equivalent professional credential.
• Hands-on experience in design, design management, and construction or supervision within water supply and wastewater infrastructure.
• Background in pipelines and pump stations, including delivery through the construction stage.
• Experience in a design delivery-focused discipline is preferred.
• The role is based in Auckland, and applicants open to relocating to Auckland may also be considered.
