Position Overview
The City of Fort Saskatchewan is seeking a Planner I who will report directly to the Manager of Current & Long Range Planning. This role focuses on delivering efficient and quality planning services within a dynamic and collaborative team environment and involves participating in both local and regional planning initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and process various land development-related applications including subdivision requests, Land Use Bylaw amendments, road closures, and other development proposals to prepare land appropriately for development.
- Ensure timely intake of complete applications along with corresponding fees. Coordinate circulation, team reviews, evaluations, and prioritization processes for applications.
- Serve as a liaison for developers and the public on new development projects, such as subdivision applications and specific site development or redevelopment proposals.
- Perform initial research, reviews, and evaluations of land development proposals using planning documents, bylaws, legislation, and municipal policies and regulations before application.
- Communicate and collaborate with applicants, as well as external agencies, to prepare recommendations.
- Draft, prepare, and present detailed reports to City Council, Subdivision Approving Authority, Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, the public, and other relevant organizations.
- Support the preparation and processing of both statutory and non-statutory planning documents and amendments.
- Assist in organizing and conducting public engagement activities related to planning projects.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum two-year diploma in Urban Planning or a related field; however, a university degree in Urban, Regional, or Environmental Planning or similar discipline is preferred.
- At least three years of relevant work experience.
- Must hold a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
- Membership in, or eligibility for membership in, the Canadian Institute of Planners Alberta is mandatory.
- Comprehensive understanding of municipal planning and development processes, including Provincial Acts and Regulations.
- Proficiency in drafting and interpreting planning policies such as Land Use Bylaw, subdivision processes, Municipal Development Plans, and Area Structure Plans.
- Strong skills in communication, dispute resolution, organization, and time management, with adaptability to changing priorities.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, AutoCAD, SketchUp, and GIS software is essential.
- Experience in Urban Design and Architecture is advantageous.
