Overview
Under supervision from the Supervisor of Animal Care Programs and guided by the Animal Nutrition Specialist, this part-time role supports the daily functions of the Animal Nutrition Department at the zoological gardens. The position’s focus is assisting with the preparation and delivery of animal diets, managing food inventory, and maintaining cleanliness and organization of the commissary. A strict adherence to food safety and animal welfare standards is required. Due to access to controlled substances, candidates must not have any felony convictions associated with such substances.
Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing and portioning diets for animals according to protocols.
- Deliver the prepared food to specific animal care areas promptly.
- Clean and sanitize food prep areas, tools, and equipment to comply with health and safety guidelines.
- Monitor and report inventory levels to supervisors to manage shortages or surpluses.
- Rotate food items to ensure freshness and minimize spoilage or waste.
- Unpack and verify quality and accuracy of food deliveries before storage.
- Keep meticulous records related to diet preparation and food usage.
- Follow established procedures for safe food handling, storage, and disposal.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors regarding dietary issues or special requirements.
- Operate city vehicles, zoo rides, attractions, and other motor equipment as needed.
- Support special projects and events that require commissary assistance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of basic food preparation, animal nutrition, sanitation, and safety practices.
- Competency in record keeping, labeling, and documentation related to food handling.
- Ability to measure and prepare diets accurately and maintain an organized workspace.
- Proficiency in basic math and computer functions.
- Strong time management and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Capability to operate kitchen equipment, vehicles, and inventory systems safely.
- Mentoring skills to train volunteers or interns in diet preparation and food safety.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to work harmoniously within a team.
- Adaptability to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Experience and Education
Preference for prior experience in food preparation, animal care, or similar fields. A high school diploma or GED is required. A valid Texas driver's license (or ability to obtain within 90 days) and a food handler's certificate (or ability to obtain within 90 days) are mandatory.
Physical and Other Requirements
- Must undergo Bloodborne Pathogens and HazCom training within 60 days of hire.
- Employee must have no felony convictions related to controlled substances according to DEA, DPS, and DSHS regulations.
- Flexible working hours including weekends and holidays may be required.
- Comfortable handling raw meat, produce, and other food items.
- Work may involve exposure to outdoor weather and commercial kitchen hazards such as sharp tools, slippery floors, and hazardous materials.
- Must work independently and occasionally in harsh climatic conditions or near moving equipment.
- Required TB testing before hire and annual tests thereafter.
- Encouraged participation in safety training and professional development.
- Physical demands include medium strength requirements, involving lifting up to 50 pounds and frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, and balancing.
