Role Overview

The Paper Conservator is entrusted with assessing, preserving, restoring, and documenting paper-based cultural artifacts such as manuscripts, printed materials, maps, photographs, and archival collections. This role demands adherence to global conservation ethics and standards to maintain the longevity of these materials.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess and examine the condition of various paper items and collections.
• Develop and implement conservation and restoration processes that are reversible and well-documented.
• Create comprehensive written and photographic records before, during, and after treatment procedures.
• Carry out preventive conservation measures, including guidance on storage, handling, exhibition, environmental controls, and pest management.
• Provide expertise on the preparation and display of paper artifacts, including mounting and framing.
• Engage in emergency response efforts to handle collection risks such as water, fire, or mold damage.
• Collaborate closely with curators, archivists, librarians, scientists, and fellow conservators.
• Participate in collection surveys, risk analyses, and the development of conservation plans.
• Support or conduct research related to conservation materials, procedures, and historical paper technologies.
• Ensure compliance with professional ethical standards, safety protocols, and institutional regulations.
• Assist in training, mentoring, or supervising interns and technicians as needed.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• A degree specializing in conservation with a focus on paper from an accredited institution.
• Proven hands-on experience in conserving paper-based materials.
• Extensive understanding of paper substrates, inks, pigments, adhesives, and conservation media.
• Awareness of international conservation protocols and ethical frameworks.
• Strong skills in detailed documentation and report preparation.
• Capability to operate both autonomously and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
