Network Engineer II

Overview

This position entails management of the public safety radio system within MESA, including oversight of hardware and non-application software related to storage, servers, and routing/switching components. Responsibilities

• Oversee the radio system including hardware, software, databases, towers, tower facilities, microwave links, generators, battery backup systems, dispatch consoles, and mobile/handheld radios.
• Handle maintenance functions such as monitoring system health, scheduling upkeep, coordinating with vendors, and ensuring thorough documentation.
• Secure all tower sites encompassing buildings, towers, perimeters, and grounds.
• Maintain open communication with agencies using the radio system, addressing inquiries, solving issues, coordinating activities, and conveying policy or procedural updates as needed.
• Ensure all licenses for radio frequencies and tower sites comply with FCC, FAA, and federal regulations.
• Generate reports concerning the radio system upon request from management or end users.
• Stay informed on emerging technologies and trends by participating in relevant workshops and training.
• Set annual goals and objectives for radio system operations.
• Assist with budget preparation related to radio system components.
• Be available 24/7 on call to support MESA operational needs as assigned.
• Supervise and mentor direct reports, including conducting performance reviews and monitoring skill development.
• Carry out other duties assigned by management as necessary.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with five years of progressively responsible experience in application or systems administration; one year of related experience can substitute for one year of education.
• Preferably experienced in Public Safety environments with Motorola Solutions ASTRO25 radio systems.
• Excellent interpersonal communication, facilitation, independent judgment, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication capabilities, including effective presentation skills.
• Familiarity with standard office practices and self-motivation to work independently.
• Valid Indiana Driver's License is required and must be maintained.
• Technical proficiency with Microsoft technologies like SQL Server Data Tools, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 or newer, and Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Experience in disaster recovery planning, project management, Cat5e cable termination, and data center fiber optic operations.
• Introductory knowledge in installation and configuration of physical and virtual servers, Cisco routers and switches, VMware vSphere, cloud computing, firewalls, backup administration, plus privacy and security management.

Working Conditions

• Primarily based in standard office and IT data center settings.
• May require unscheduled call-outs and after-hours or off-site work occasionally.
• Tasks may involve working in areas with temperature extremes and limited housekeeping such as closets and basements.
• Attendance at meetings at customer sites and travel to multiple facility locations to maintain IT equipment is required.
