MSP Crime Scene Technician I

Position Overview

This role belongs to the MSP Crime Scene Technician I classification within Maryland's Eastern Region, covering counties including Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, Dorchester, Caroline, Worcester, Somerset, and Wicomico. Location and Grade

Work location is at the MSP Easton Barrack, 7053 Ocean Gateway, Easton, MD 21601. The position falls under grade ASTD15.

Key Responsibilities

• Examine crime scenes to assess the scientific significance of various evidence types.
• Identify, collect, document, and preserve evidence for subsequent analysis.
• Engage in training to analyze evidence and potentially reconstruct crime scenes by interpreting the mechanisms underlying crimes.
• Process latent prints using chemical and scientifically validated enhancement methods, evaluating their evidentiary value.
• Conduct technical scale photography following scientific protocols and working group guidance.
• Maintain accreditation by successfully completing annual proficiency tests aligned with ISO 17025 and ANAB standards.
• Compose clear and informative technical reports.
• Label and categorize evidence accurately and input detailed information into the laboratory information management system (STARLIMS).

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, forensic sciences, chemistry, biology, geology, or related physical or natural science from an accredited institution.
• No previous experience is mandatory; however, relevant experience in identifying, collecting, documenting, and preserving physical evidence at crime or disaster scenes can substitute the degree on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in crime scene or disaster scene environments.
• Completion of internships involving crime or disaster scene duties.

Licensing and Special Conditions

• Must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license if assigned duties include driving.
• Pre-employment requirements include drug screening, physical exam, DNA submission, comprehensive criminal background check, and polygraph examination.
• Ongoing random substance abuse testing applies per Maryland regulations.
• Availability to be called in 24/7 is required with accessible contact information provided to the agency.

Selection Procedure

Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be assessed and ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified for an eligibility list valid for at least one year. Selection also involves interviews, background checks, polygraph testing, and drug screening.
