Mobile Support Equipment Operator

Role Overview

As part of the military forces, Mobile Support Equipment Operators are responsible for driving and managing a diverse range of military vehicles, including standard cars, trucks, buses, all-terrain vehicles, and specialized machinery such as snow removal equipment and fuel tankers.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive buses, automobiles, trucks, and tractor-trailers safely and efficiently.
• Operate specialized support equipment including fueling tankers, snowplows, tractors, and all-terrain vehicles.
• Handle materiel and equipment; this includes receiving, loading, securing, and unloading cargo transported over roadways.
• Provide vital transportation assistance during combat scenarios and field missions.
• Maintain vehicles and equipment by cleaning, inspecting, and addressing minor faults to ensure readiness.
• Prepare dispatch schedules and coordinate vehicle and equipment requirements with users.
• Complete and manage associated paperwork such as job records, forms, and reports.

Work Environment

Operators work under various conditions including both indoor base settings and outdoor field operations, sometimes in challenging climates or during missions abroad. While Regular Force members may expect relocation during their careers, those in the Primary Reserve generally serve part-time with their local unit, working mostly one evening per week and occasional weekends, with no obligation to relocate.

Entry Requirements and Training

• No prior work experience or specific skills are required to apply. Recruiters will assist in assessing fit based on interests and attributes.
• Applicants must have completed Grade 10 or Secondary 4 (Quebec provincial requirement). Foreign credentials may be accepted.
• Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at the Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, emphasizing physical fitness and core military skills.
• Mobile Support Equipment Operators then undergo approximately 87 days of specialized instruction at the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre in Borden, Ontario, covering topics such as vehicle operation (manual and automatic), field operations, camouflage, tactical road movements, vehicle recovery, map reading, airfield operations basics, and handling of dangerous goods.

Advanced Training and Specializations

• Opportunities exist for advanced schooling and on-the-job training in areas including: safety supervision, evasive anti-terrorist driving, instructional techniques, vehicle instructor roles (tractor-trailer, bus, air brake systems), and master driver designation.
• Further progression includes courses for dispatching, leadership training (section commander, middle management), and fleet management.

Part-Time Opportunities for Reservists

This position is also accessible within the Primary Reserve in various locations nationwide, allowing service alongside civilian careers or studies. Reserve members train to the same standards as Regular Force personnel, with part-time commitments primarily during evenings and weekends. Compensation is slightly below regular forces rates, accompanied by benefits and pension options. Reservists are based locally and are not required to relocate but may volunteer for deployments.
