Manager Health Science

Position Overview

Based in Wellington, this permanent full-time role offers 4.8 weeks of annual leave plus a wellness allowance after 12 months. As Manager Health Science, you will play a crucial role in leading the science that drives improved health outcomes for New Zealanders. Reporting directly to the Chief Science Advisor, you will be instrumental in supporting evidence-based policy that shapes the nation’s healthcare future.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and management of a high-performing Health Science team, overseeing health science, research, and library services.
• Embed scientific expertise and rigorous evidence into policy development, regulatory frameworks, and operational initiatives to support informed decision-making.
• Collaborate with the Chief Science Advisor to define health research priorities and system leadership, enhancing the Ministry's research strategy and strengthening intergovernmental and sector relationships.
• Manage complex projects aligned with government and ministry priorities, ensuring effective risk, resource, and performance management.
• Establish and maintain trusted partnerships across the Ministry, broader health sector, government entities, and stakeholders, while honoring commitments to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Advanced knowledge and expertise in health science or a related discipline, with a solid understanding of health systems and evidence-based methodologies.
• Demonstrated leadership experience with the capability to nurture and develop high-achieving teams and deliver strategic objectives.
• In-depth understanding of research ecosystems, science advisory processes, and the translation of evidence into practical policy and healthcare applications.
• Exceptional skills in communication, influence, and stakeholder management, capable of engaging with diverse groups and leadership.
• Strong strategic acumen, sound judgment, resilience, and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, adept at navigating complexity and change.

Compensation
