Health Information Coordinator

Role overview

This position is a leadership-level medical records role responsible for overseeing technical or clerical staff within a medical records unit. The work centers on organizing, maintaining, reviewing, and reporting health information accurately and in line with applicable federal and state regulations, along with agency and facility policies.

The role requires solid knowledge of medical records management practices, current classification systems, medical terminology, and report preparation methods. It also calls for the ability to abstract data from records and other patient information, ensure completeness and accuracy of documentation, communicate information clearly, work effectively with others, use a personal computer, and guide the work of team members.

• Annual salary: $41,500 plus benefit allowance
• Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• FLSA status: Non-Exempt

Minimum qualifications

Applicants should meet one of the following qualification paths: accreditation through the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) with two years of experience in the medical records field; eligibility for registration through AHIMA as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); or five years of experience handling patient records in a healthcare setting such as a hospital, state institution, medical clinic, or physician’s office.

Special requirements

Candidates must be willing and able to travel as needed for the job and must have a valid driver’s license.

Jim Taliaferro Community Mental Health Center in Lawton, Oklahoma is a community-focused center serving mental health and substance abuse treatment needs. Services include inpatient and outpatient care for adolescents, people with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, seniors and older adults, women, men, and criminal justice groups.

Testing and work expectations

For safety-sensitive roles, conditional hires must complete drug testing by urinalysis, and employment is dependent on a negative result. The agency operates around the clock, seven days a week, so work location and hours may change based on operational needs. Weekend shifts and overtime may be required.
