Role Overview
The Health and Safety Manager at Bunge's Nellore plant plays a vital role in fostering awareness of occupational health and safety, ensuring compliance, and overseeing safety-related assessments and training programs. This position works closely with plant leadership to implement safety initiatives and disseminate best practices within the facility and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain adherence to all legal and company-specific health and safety regulations, regularly tracking and reporting compliance and improvement efforts to the Plant Head.
- Keep thorough records of health and safety compliance throughout the facility.
- Stay informed about changes to statutory safety regulations that affect compliance requirements.
- Act as the primary contact for all plant-related safety matters, supporting leadership and staff in understanding regulations, managing inspections, and handling compliance issues.
- Advise in planning, organizing, and maintaining a safe workplace environment, including setting health and safety objectives.
- Maintain and update the risk register for the area, ensuring risk assessments are conducted for all significant hazards.
- Implement company occupational health and safety procedures and develop facility-specific safety protocols aligned with legal and organizational standards.
- Organize and lead monthly Safety Steering Committee meetings to drive continuous safety improvements.
- Support the appointment and involvement of key safety roles such as risk assessors, first aiders, and fire wardens within the plant.
- Ensure risk assessments and proper planning during staff relocations.
- Manage contractor safety by establishing systems for contractor identification, induction, and access control, collaborating with contractor representatives.
- Guide construction safety practices through coordination with contractor safety leaders.
- Oversee safety management of plant modifications and projects via change management processes including safety audits before and after changes.
- Set and provide guidance on personal protective equipment (PPE) management.
- Maintain fire and emergency preparedness including conducting mock drills, identifying gaps, and implementing corrective actions.
- Conduct regular safety audits throughout the site.
- Ensure all employees undergo proper safety induction procedures.
- Identify training requirements for staff according to the training matrix, coordinating with managers to schedule necessary courses.
- Monitor and report training compliance and progress to plant leadership and department heads.
- Develop effective communication tools, such as health and safety display boards, to keep all personnel informed of safety matters.
Performance Metrics
- Achieve safety goals including zero lost time injuries (LTI).
- Maintain complete food safety standards.
- Document, report, and investigate all injuries, accidents, and hazardous incidents; provide statistical data and highlight trends to safety committees and management.
- Investigate incidents to determine causes and recommend measures to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure timely and proper accident investigations by department managers and facilitate sharing of lessons learned.
- Handle health and safety compliance investigations with staff and supervisors, providing recommendations to resolve issues.
- Coordinate external occupational health and safety audits and ensure audit recommendations are implemented promptly.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of statutory compliance related to health and safety.
- Strong multitasking and coordination capabilities.
- High energy and motivation focused on achieving results.
- Ability to benchmark and cross-reference safety standards and practices.
- Working knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office software.
Educational and Professional Background
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Diploma in Industrial Safety from an accredited institute.
- Extensive experience of 15 to 20 years within the FMCG sector.
