Head of Engineering - Utility-Scale Solar PV & Battery Energy Storage Systems

About the Role

We are offering a premier opportunity to take on the role of Head of Engineering at a well-capitalized and fast-growing renewable energy developer operating across Germany and Europe. This position involves leading engineering efforts for utility-scale Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects throughout all phases—from initial development and technical due diligence through to Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) delivery, commissioning, and final operational handover.

In this leadership role, you will serve as the main technical authority overseeing a diverse portfolio of renewable energy projects, guiding investment assessments, engineering strategies, procurement processes, and project execution. Collaborating closely with internal project teams and external stakeholders such as EPC contractors, consultants, original equipment manufacturers, grid operators, and technical advisors, you will ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all engineering operations related to utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects.
• Provide technical expertise and support from early development stages through to construction, commissioning, and operational phases.
• Manage technical due diligence for project acquisitions and investment prospects.
• Develop and critically assess technical specifications, employer requirements, and EPC documentation.
• Review technical proposals, detailed designs, and submissions from EPC contractors.
• Make informed decisions on equipment selections to optimize plant performance and overall project economics.
• Identify and mitigate technical risks effectively.
• Coordinate engagement with external engineering consultants and technical advisors.
• Contribute technical insights to contract negotiations.
• Conduct technical site inspections during development and construction phases.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
• Demonstrated extensive experience in delivering utility-scale renewable energy projects.
• Specific expertise in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Solar PV technologies.
• Background experience working with developers, independent power producers (IPPs), EPC contractors, or engineering consultancies.
• Strong comprehension of EPC project delivery, technical due diligence workflows, and engineering document management.
• Familiarity with engineering and modeling software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, Homer, or equivalent tools.
• Business-savvy with strong stakeholder management and communication abilities.
• Fluency in both English and German languages is essential.
