Role Summary

This is a full-time, on-site editorial position in Apia. The Editor will oversee everyday newsroom activity and ensure that all published material meets high standards of quality and factual accuracy. The role includes allocating and reviewing stories, refining copy for clarity, consistency, and house style, and working closely with reporters, photographers, and designers to deliver content on schedule. In addition, the Editor will maintain the editorial timetable, protect journalistic and ethical standards, guide staff development, and contribute to planning that strengthens the publication’s editorial identity and audience reach.

Key Duties

• Direct the day-to-day workflow of the newsroom and keep publication processes on track.
• Assign stories and review submissions to make sure content is accurate, clear, and consistent.
• Edit articles for style, grammar, structure, and readability before publication.
• Coordinate with reporters, photographers, and designers so deadlines are met efficiently.
• Manage the editorial calendar and ensure content is delivered for print and online platforms.
• Uphold editorial integrity by enforcing ethical reporting and fact-checking standards.
• Support and mentor team members through practical guidance and constructive feedback.
• Contribute to editorial strategy and help shape content that strengthens the newspaper’s voice and audience engagement.

Required Qualifications

• Strong copyediting and proofreading capability, with excellent attention to detail and consistency.
• Previous experience in a newsroom, media house, or similar editorial setting, including coordination of editorial processes.
• Clear written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to advise and direct staff effectively.
• A firm commitment to ethical journalism, including accuracy, impartiality, and careful verification of facts.
• Comfort working on-site in Apia, handling several priorities at once, and performing well under tight deadlines.
• Familiarity with digital publishing systems and social media channels used for online distribution and engagement.
• A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent professional background.
• Knowledge of Samoan current events and cultural context is considered an added advantage.
