Job description
About Portcast
Portcast is a Singapore-based venture-backed logistics technology startup that develops a real-time transportation visibility platform designed for global supply chains. Our platform empowers shippers, manufacturers, and logistics service providers to convert complex data into actionable decisions, resulting in measurable business improvements. Beyond just visibility, Portcast enables proactive risk management to reduce detention and demurrage fees, speed up exception handling, and accelerate invoice closures with built-in evidence, ultimately lowering costs and enhancing operational oversight.
Founded in 2018 and supported by top technology investors, we serve clients including global freight forwarders, manufacturers, and cargo airlines. Our offering relies on highly accurate delay prediction engines for containers, which is underpinned by high data integrity — a responsibility owned by our Data Analysts.
Role Overview
As a Data Analyst at Portcast, reporting to the Analytics Manager, you will collaborate closely with Data Science, Engineering, Product, and Commercial teams. This role involves ensuring the highest data quality for models that provide customers with end-to-end visibility of ocean freight cargo movements. You are expected not only to identify anomalies but to investigate root causes, trace them to their sources, and implement long-term solutions that prevent recurrence. Intellectual curiosity and proactive problem-solving are essential traits in this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Document, report, and conduct thorough root-cause analyses of prediction issues, managing problems fully rather than simply flagging them.
- Analyze ingested and system-generated data to detect inconsistencies, anomalies, and coverage gaps, and source information to address these deficiencies.
- Translate data insights into compelling narratives by identifying patterns behind problems, recommending quality assurance improvements or automation, and leading corrective plans.
- Create automated, scalable workflows for performance reviews, accuracy assessments, report generation, and data visualization using Python and SQL.
- Support Engineering and Data Science teams with system-level data corrections and explore enhancements by amending or introducing new features.
- Provide actionable insights to Customer Operations and Marketing teams regarding performance metrics, accuracy data, and the effect of real-time events.
- Maintain and develop internal and client-facing dashboards tailored to trial and account-specific requirements concerning prediction accuracy, timeliness, coverage, and explainability.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related disciplines.
- Minimum three years experience as a Data or Business Analyst, ideally in product-centric, agile startup environments.
- Highly proficient in Python and SQL with a demonstrated history of delivering reusable, scalable code.
- Exceptional attention to detail with a proactive approach to uncover system anomalies before they affect customers and the ability to clarify disorganized data via effective visualizations.
- Strong foundation in first principles thinking—able to clearly explain decision-making processes, constraints, and trade-offs without relying on new tools unnecessarily.
- Innate curiosity driving deeper investigation of unexpected data findings beyond surface-level fixes, asking insightful questions early on.
- Ownership of work quality including thoughtful, validated use of AI-assisted tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to enhance efficiency while remaining fully accountable for final outputs.
- Empathy towards customers with a sense of urgency to respond promptly to meet operational expectations, whether programmatically or manually.
- Excellent communication skills to convey complex ideas effectively both verbally and in writing, team-oriented with the ability to engage constructively in disagreements.
- Experience collaborating within diverse, dynamic, cross-cultural teams, demonstrating strong ownership mentality, efficiency, and a data-driven mindset.
- Bonus: Basic knowledge of machine learning algorithms.
Benefits and Culture
- Remote-first setup with a globally distributed team across Asia and Europe, fostering diversity and collaboration based on trust and accountability.
- A data-centric team passionate about tackling challenging problems through analytics.
- Accelerated personal and professional growth by taking ownership of data quality and analytics from the outset, contributing to the company's journey toward becoming a leader in predictive supply chains.
- The opportunity to see tangible business impact from your work in a lean organizational structure.
Core Company Values
- Curiosity: Delve into data details before trusting it, understanding anomalies rather than just eliminating them.
- Ownership: Act with founder-like responsibility, proactively identifying and fixing data issues at their origin.
- Raising the bar: Deliver robust, reusable, and trustworthy data pipelines and dashboards, avoiding one-time fixes.
- Effectiveness: Prioritize analysis that leads to real product and customer impacts, making practical decisions and delivering improvements.
Join our high-performance team at Portcast and contribute to revolutionizing the logistics and shipping sector through advanced predictive analytics technology.
