Community Education Specialist

Position Summary

This role centers on delivering parent education, technical assistance, and continuing support to parents, volunteers, and community collaborators using The Family Tree’s evidence-based approaches. The objective is to improve family functioning and help reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. The specialist will work to expand understanding and practical skills related to child and youth development and positive behavior guidance across Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and nearby communities. The job also involves encouraging parents and helping them build confidence in supporting their children. Work schedules are flexible and adjusted to community needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement parent engagement and education plans in assigned communities to boost participation and support better family outcomes.
• Develop and sustain working relationships with community and parent leaders through regular consultation and partnership.
• Advance child abuse prevention through outreach activities, presentations, and community-based engagement.
• Organize and lead workshops on positive parenting and family strengthening.
• Provide training in schools and community environments on child development, abuse prevention, and effective parenting methods.
• Assist with recruiting, training, and overseeing volunteers and student interns.
• Evaluate family needs, work with parents on action plans, and connect them to suitable resources.
• Keep program records current and accurate, including participant information, assessments, and evaluation tools in the agency database.
• Distribute client satisfaction surveys and complete follow-up actions to measure program impact.
• Prepare monthly statistics and program reports as required by the organization.

Education

A bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science or related area such as Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Mental Health, Nursing, or Education is preferred. An associate degree in a related field is required, or completion of at least 60 credit hours at an accredited four-year college or university in a behavioral science or related discipline.

Experience

Candidates should have at least 2 years of experience in human services, social services, or a similar area, along with 1 year of direct work with children and/or families in group settings. Prior experience in teaching, training, or workshop facilitation is strongly preferred.

Work Environment

Bilingual Spanish ability is highly preferred. The position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings when needed to accommodate the community. Reliable transportation is necessary to cover the Baltimore metropolitan area. If using a personal vehicle, the candidate must have a valid driver’s license and active car insurance. The role also requires willingness and ability to travel to multiple program sites and communities throughout Maryland.
