Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Examiner

Position Overview

The State of Tennessee is seeking a dedicated Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Examiner to join the Department of Safety and Homeland Security located in Knoxville, TN. This full-time role involves conducting comprehensive CDL examinations including knowledge and road tests, determining appropriate license categories, ensuring applicants meet qualifications, processing fees, and issuing licenses under general supervision.

Compensation

Starting monthly salary for new hires is $3,401, increasing to $3,775 after one year of satisfactory service. Additionally, incumbents working in the Davidson, Hamilton, Knox, and Shelby county metropolitan areas receive a 10% assignment differential. The annual salary equates to approximately $38,748, with payments made monthly.

Key Responsibilities

• Train associate-level employees on CDL examination practices and provide guidance and clarification on role-specific tasks.
• Collect necessary information and process applications for commercial driver licenses and related documents, ensuring accuracy and timely data entry into computer systems.
• Administer CDL knowledge, road skills tests, vision screenings, and other assessments to applicants according to federal and state guidelines.
• Advise applicants on results, retesting procedures, and ensure proper documentation using digital photography and database recording.
• Communicate licensing rules, regulations, fees, and procedures effectively to the public and assist with inquiries.
• Manage cash handling duties including reconciling daily revenue, balancing registers, and reporting discrepancies.
• Conduct vehicle inspections to verify mechanical safety and applicants' compliance with traffic laws during practical testing.
• Maintain accurate licensing records by updating the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST) and cross-verifying applicant information.
• Fulfill mandatory annual training by completing at least 10 hours of CDL knowledge and road testing to stay compliant with laws.

Qualifications & Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Successful completion of criminal background clearance including fingerprint-based and name-based checks.
• No convictions for permanent disqualifying offenses under 49 CFR §1572.103(a).
• No convictions or release from incarceration for interim disqualifying offenses under 49 CFR §1572.103(b) within relevant timeframes.
• No active warrants or wants for felony offenses as specified in federal regulations.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment physical exam.
• Possession or ability to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment.
• Five-year clean driving record free of DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions due to moving violations, or excessive moving violations (over four).
