About the Role
A seed-stage AI startup based in San Mateo is searching for a seasoned Chief of Staff to partner directly with the CEO. This full-time position requires working onsite five days a week. The successful candidate will spearhead key strategic initiatives across company operations, partnerships, go-to-market strategies, and financial planning. This dynamic, hands-on role offers the chance for growth into senior leadership positions such as General Manager or COO.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive critical strategic and operational projects from conception through completion.
- Lead commercial pilot programs, forge partnerships, and manage go-to-market efforts.
- Set company priorities, develop KPIs, and establish operational rhythms.
- Construct detailed financial models and analyses to support major corporate decisions.
- Prepare comprehensive board materials and contribute to ongoing company strategy development.
Candidate Profile
Ideal applicants will have substantial experience combining consulting and operational roles or extensive involvement in startup strategy and operations management:
- A background of 2-4 years in management consulting plus minimum 2 years in an operational role at a high-growth technology firm or startup, or
- At least 5 years in startup strategy, business operations, general management, product operations, or as a founding team member.
Additional essential qualifications include:
- Demonstrable ownership of complex and ambiguous projects through to successful execution.
- Proven track record of delivering tangible commercial or operational outcomes.
- Strong analytical capabilities and adept at structured problem solving.
- Experience working independently with scarce resources and minimal guidance.
- Availability to work full-time onsite in San Mateo.
Important Notes
This is a high-impact role demanding direct ownership of results; it is not suitable for candidates experienced solely in advisory capacities, executive assistance, project coordination, or those without responsibility for outcomes. Insurance industry experience, MBA credentials, or previous Chief of Staff roles are not prerequisites.
Compensation & Location
- Base salary range: $170,000 to $210,000 per year.
- Additional compensation: 15-20% bonus plus meaningful equity.
- Location: San Mateo, California, working five days weekly at the office.
