About the Role

The Directorate of Laboratory Medicine, also identified as the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), covers multiple specialties including Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Microbiology, and Cytogenetics. This department provides extensive analysis services for blood, body fluids, and tissues for hospital inpatients, outpatients, GP clinics across Norfolk, and neighboring Trusts.

Incoming samples predominantly arrive at a central reception where staff are responsible for sorting, registering them into laboratory computer systems, and preparing them for further examination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sort and redirect samples upon receipt
  • Verify samples for suitability for testing
  • Input samples into lab computer systems for tracking and analysis
  • Label and prepare samples for laboratory testing including use of equipment such as centrifuges, balances, and pipettes
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity along with the ability to work attentively and independently

This position operates on a 24-hour departmental shift rota including night shifts (one week out of every eight weeks) and weekend duties (one weekend every four weeks). The role is full time, requiring 37.5 hours per week.
