About the Role
The Department of Conservation (DOC) is dedicated to safeguarding New Zealand’s natural and historic heritage for current and future generations. The Regional Operations Group leads frontline conservation efforts across the Eastern North Island.
The Principal Ranger is a vital leadership position responsible for guiding district teams and ensuring priority conservation projects are executed effectively to drive impactful environmental outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruit, onboard, and cultivate a positive, collaborative team culture.
- Plan, schedule, and allocate work to meet deadlines and budget requirements.
- Participate in the District Leadership Team, influencing resources and strategic priorities.
- Build respectful, productive relationships with Māori/iwi to support shared objectives.
- Manage budgets and financial tracking alongside monitoring risks and performance measures.
- Collaborate extensively with internal departments and community partners.
- Model integrity and foster strong relational leadership throughout all activities.
Skills and Experience
- Proven leadership experience, skilled in motivating teams and promoting a supportive workplace environment.
- Competent in financial and resource management.
- Experienced in operational fieldwork related to conservation.
- Strong communication and collaborative skills, capable of building internal and external relationships.
- Background in project and contract management.
- Adept at working constructively with whānau, hapū, iwi, community groups, and businesses.

- Salary range: $92,912 - $117,570 annually, depending on skills and experience.
