Job description

Overview

Join His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) at HMP Bullingdon as an Operational Support Grade (OSG). This vital role involves contributing to the smooth running of a busy prison through a mix of administrative tasks and physical duties, ensuring security and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

As an OSG, you will be engaged in various duties including securing the prison entrance by conducting searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV footage. The position requires a balance of desk-based activities and physical tasks such as lifting, carrying items, and escorting vehicles across the prison grounds.

Candidate Requirements and Eligibility

Applicants must hold a full and valid UK driving licence including the D1 category, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, with a maximum length of 8 meters, and towing trailers up to 750kg. While no formal qualifications are mandatory, excellent communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, sound judgment, and teamwork are essential.

The role entails working various shifts, including nights and weekends, and applicants should consider their commute carefully as shift times are fixed and reliable transport is necessary. A driving licence and vehicle are beneficial but not strictly required unless specifically indicated.

Benefits and Development

This position offers great career progression with comprehensive training and opportunities to transition into other prison roles, including a conversion scheme to become a Prison Officer. Salary starts at 30,491, complemented by 25 days of annual leave (increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, pro-rated), 9 additional bank/public/privilege holidays, and access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.

Additional perks include enrollment in the Civil Service pension scheme, access to season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and participation in a Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional Information

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to public safety and make a meaningful impact within the prison community. Although direct contact with prisoners is limited, occasional interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
