About the Role
Join a skilled team in Devonport, Auckland dedicated to vital marine maintenance and repair within a unique shipyard setting. As a Marine Carpenter / Shipwright, you will engage with complex vessels performing structural construction, repairs, and installations vital to operational readiness. This hands-on position offers diverse daily tasks combining craftsmanship and problem-solving, all within a fast-paced and safety-conscious environment.
Who We Are
Babcock Australasia draws on over 130 years of global expertise, delivering critical defence and maritime services. In New Zealand, a team of 120+ tradespeople collaborates with the Royal New Zealand Navy at Devonport Naval Base, providing comprehensive maintenance, repair, overhaul, conversions, and retrofits for the naval fleet as well as commercial clients.
Candidate Profile
We seek experienced tradespeople with solid carpentry or boatbuilding backgrounds and an eagerness to expand into marine applications. Strong communication, adaptability, and ownership of tasks are essential. Candidates should confidently interpret technical drawings, manage changing priorities, work under pressure, and uphold high safety standards while contributing positively in team settings.
Key Responsibilities and Skills
- Perform marine and structural carpentry tasks including fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance of timber and composite ship components
- Interpret and apply technical drawings effectively
- Problem-solve operational challenges in time-sensitive scenarios
- Collaborate well with multidisciplinary teams
- Manage workloads and prioritize tasks independently
- Work confidently across varied marine and industrial environments
Qualifications and Experience
- Trade Certification (Level 4) in Boatbuilding, Carpentry, or a related field is required
- Minimum of five years’ relevant trade experience
- Full New Zealand Driver Licence (Class 1 minimum)
- Advanced Trade Certification (Level 5) or equivalent is desirable
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly rate of $38 (Level 4 Trade Certificate required)
- Time and a half pay for hours worked beyond 40 per week
- Double pay after 43 hours per week
