About the Role

The City of Edmonton's City Operations team is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that supports professional growth and values diverse perspectives. As a Lead Custodial Worker, you will oversee and actively engage in cleaning and maintaining various municipal buildings and civic facilities. This leadership position involves guiding custodial staff, organizing tasks, managing supplies, and ensuring quality service delivery with respect and inclusivity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly assign and supervise the daily tasks of in-house custodial personnel.
  • Welcome and train new employees by introducing them to custodial standards and requirements.
  • Provide hands-on guidance for the proper use of cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Keep accurate records of time spent and materials used; oversee restocking inventory as needed.
  • Adjust crew schedules in response to changing needs or staff absences.
  • Lead regular safety briefings to update staff and reinforce workplace safety culture.
  • Report incidents and near-misses promptly following established safety protocols.
  • Perform additional related duties as required to support custodial operations.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent educational level.
  • Completion of a recognized Building Service Worker Program from a post-secondary institution.
  • At least five years of custodial experience, including a minimum of three years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Credentials

  • Post-secondary education or ongoing studies in Business Administration, Human Resources, or related fields.
  • Certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).
  • Occupational Health and Safety certification.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Proficiency in English for effective communication, reading, and writing to fulfill job and safety requirements.
  • Strong customer service orientation with professional interaction skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals at various organizational levels, demonstrating responsibility and trustworthiness.
  • Capability to follow schedules and perform duties independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety procedures, and custodial equipment and materials.
  • Competence in training staff on standard operating procedures and appropriate equipment use.
  • Experience supervising and evaluating team performance.
  • Familiarity with office productivity tools such as Google Workspace or equivalent software.
  • Commitment to cultural values promoting equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion.

Employment Conditions

  • Must be medically fit to wear a respirator and comply with related safety guidelines including medical monitoring.
  • Employment contingent upon successful Enhanced Security Clearance from Edmonton Police Service.
  • Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license or equivalent; City driver’s permit may be required.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks involving bending, lifting, squatting, and moving furniture and supplies.
  • Willingness to work variable shifts on a 24/7 rotation, ensuring two days off per week, across multiple City facilities.
  • Candidates may be required to complete assessments or tests as part of the hiring process.

Work Environment

The position requires working in diverse settings that may involve exposure to dust, noise, and varying weather conditions.
