Role overview
This remote software engineering contract focuses on helping train and assess next-generation AI systems by completing realistic engineering work. The assignment is suited to experienced developers who can navigate unfamiliar codebases, justify technical decisions clearly, and address practical backend, full-stack, systems, or infrastructure challenges.
No background in AI is needed. The key requirements are strong engineering judgment, clear written communication, and the ability to evaluate code quality, architecture, tradeoffs, and implementation approaches.
What you will do
- Tackle demanding software engineering work spanning backend, full-stack, infrastructure, and systems-oriented tasks.
- Inspect, debug, refine, and explain code across varied technical setups.
- Build or assess practical solutions involving APIs, databases, services, integrations, tests, and deployment processes.
- Weigh tradeoffs related to scalability, maintainability, performance, reliability, security, and developer experience.
- Explain technical reasoning in writing, including why a solution is effective and which alternatives were considered.
- Work with the client team on technical reviews, implementation choices, and problem-solving exercises.
- Move quickly between new codebases, frameworks, and technical requirements.
Skills and experience required
- At least 5 years of practical software engineering experience.
- Strong hands-on experience in one or more backend or full-stack environments such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Go, Ruby, PHP, or similar.
- Experience creating, supporting, or reviewing production applications, APIs, services, databases, or integrations.
- Solid grasp of core engineering practices, including debugging, testing, code quality, architecture, and technical tradeoffs.
- Ability to communicate complex engineering decisions in a clear, objective way.
- Comfort working through unfamiliar code and interpreting technical requirements.
Preferred background
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD, DevOps workflows, containers, monitoring, or production operations.
- Familiarity with frontend frameworks like React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or React Native.
- Public open-source work, GitHub projects, technical writing, or strong samples of prior engineering work.
- Experience mentoring engineers, reviewing code, or contributing to architecture decisions.
