Position Overview

The Department of Critical Care Medicine at Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania is actively seeking Intensive Care Registrars for the 2027 term, running from 1 February 2027 to 7 February 2028. These full-time day and night shift roles focus on the clinical care and management of critically ill patients within Tasmania's only Tertiary Level 3 Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Opportunities exist for accredited trainees of CICM, ANZCA, ACEM, RACS, or ACRRM as well as junior doctors seeking valuable ICU experience.

Hospital and Unit Details

Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) provides a comprehensive referral center for diverse medical and surgical specialties, offering a 12-bed critical care unit divided into two pods overseen by registrars, senior medical officers, and consultants. The ICU cares for a broad caseload including cardiac surgery, ECMO, neurosurgery, and major trauma patients, with an accredited private ICU as well. Staff benefit from structured teaching programs, monthly safety and quality sessions, and support services such as Medical Emergency Response and ICU Liaison.

Employment Terms

This position is fixed-term from February 1, 2027 to February 7, 2028, requiring 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours of protected training time pro-rata. It adheres to the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025 and Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award with salaries ranging from $138,978 to $194,675 annually, classified as Medical Practitioner Level 5-11 (Registrar/Senior Registrar).

Responsibilities

• Manage both public and private inpatient and outpatient care in ICU settings.
• Provide after-hours emergency support in designated work units.
• Participate fully in the multidisciplinary team and actively engage in teaching and quality initiatives.

Essential Requirements

• Applicants must possess at least post-graduate year 4 equivalent experience by 2027.
• Hold general or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia and current Tasmanian Working with Children registration if applicable.
• Successful candidates must clear a series of pre-employment background checks covering criminal convictions, identity verification, and employment disciplinary history.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• Prior experience in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, and/or Emergency Medicine with procedural skill competence.
• Completion of acute care and resuscitation certifications such as ALS, BASIC, APLS, EMST, and formal Point of Care Ultrasound training.
• Accreditation with CICM, ANZCA, ACEM, or ACRRM preferred.
• Involvement in audit, research, teaching, and safety or quality improvement activities.
• Demonstrated leadership experience.
