Firefighter/Paramedic

Overview

The City of Seguin is seeking Firefighter/Paramedics committed to safeguarding residents and property by preventing and combating fires, in addition to delivering emergency medical assistance on-site during accidents or illnesses. This role involves responding swiftly to emergency alarms and calls, engaging in fire suppression activities, and contributing to maintenance of the station, firefighting equipment, and grounds.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond promptly to fire alarms and emergency situations to assist with fire suppression, rescue operations, ventilation, and salvage tasks.
• Operate fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles safely during transit to incident sites.
• Set up and manage supply lines, operate water pumps and related fire suppression equipment, ensuring readiness of vehicles and apparatus during emergencies.
• Assume incident command responsibilities when required, directing other firefighting or EMS personnel, volunteers, and the public until relieved by a supervisor.
• Conduct clean-up and overhaul efforts once fires are extinguished.
• Perform routine maintenance, minor repairs, and cleaning of medical and firefighting equipment, vehicles, apparatus, stations, and grounds.
• Administer emergency medical care in accordance with one's certifications and skills.
• Complete detailed documentation including comprehensive reports of incidents, patient assessment, treatments rendered, and other relevant details.
• Record patient histories and conduct pre-hospital assessments.
• Provide monitoring and treatment during patient transport and ensure thorough communication upon arriving at medical facilities.
• Restock and sanitize equipment and supplies post-run.
• Participate actively in fire safety inspections, prevention activities, and hydrant upkeep.
• Engage in ongoing departmental training and wellness programs.
• Support investigations related to fire origin and arson, assist other municipal departments as needed, utilize computer systems for record keeping, adhere strictly to safety procedures, and perform additional duties assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of city geography.
• Familiarity with county geography; basic concepts in physics, chemistry, mechanics; fire fighting principles and techniques; hydraulics applied to firefighting; and compliance with federal, state, and local EMS and fire regulations.
• Proficiency in safely operating emergency vehicles.
• Physical capacity to swim, lift and handle up to 165 pounds (including equipment such as hoses, gear, air packs, ladders), climb ladders, execute CPR, and perform physically strenuous labor under challenging conditions such as smoke-filled environments and adverse weather.
• Mental resilience to work at heights and confined spaces for extended periods.
• Ability to read maps accurately, maintain precise records, establish cooperative relationships with coworkers and the public, communicate effectively with individuals under stress, and uphold necessary certifications and valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
• Must be able to legally respond to emergency duty from residence within one hour.
• Potential exposure to hazardous or toxic materials requiring safe handling.

Experience and Education

Applicants must have a high school diploma or its equivalent; some college coursework in fire sciences is valued but not required.

Licenses and Certifications

• Basic Firefighter certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection is mandatory.
• Must obtain a Texas Class "B" driver's license within six months of employment.

Additional Information
