Emergency Department and Observation Coder

Overview

Under supervision, the Emergency Department (ED) and Observation Coder accurately assigns medical codes related to professional services, conditions, procedures, and modifiers by thoroughly reviewing medical documentation from hospitals, clinics, outpatient surgery centers, urgent care facilities, and ED environments.

Primary Responsibilities

• Analyze medical records meticulously to assign codes using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems along with appropriate modifiers.
• Apply coding standards based on ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines, CPT professional and surgical service rules, CMS updates, and guidance from the American Hospital Association's Coding Clinic.
• Follow HCPCS coding norms, adhere to National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, consider LCD/NCD rulings, and conform to client-specific coding requirements.

Professional Experience

Candidates must have between two to five years of experience working in medical coding for multispecialty settings, specifically with Observation and Emergency Department coding.
