Role overview
The Ministry of Education New Zealand is hiring a permanent Early Intervention Teacher for its Christchurch office. This role sits within Learning Support and is focused on helping strengthen equitable, excellent outcomes for children and families across the education system.
What you will do
- Provide high-quality learning support aligned with the Ministry’s practice framework, He Pikorua, as well as the guiding principles, strands, and goals of Te Whāriki, Te Whāriki a te Kōhanga Reo, and related early learning approaches.
- Develop the capability of the people closest to the child’s learning, including parents, teachers, and whānau/families.
- Work with families to understand their needs, co-design support plans, and monitor how intervention plans are carried out.
- Help manage key transition points in a child’s learning journey, including movement into early childhood education and onward to school when needed.
- Contribute as part of a trans-disciplinary team when a child’s needs are complex.
What we are looking for
To do well in this position, you will need a strong grounding in early childhood teaching, child development, learning, and behaviour, along with the ability to work effectively with learners, families, and teachers in varied settings. You should also be able to apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga in your practice.
Qualifications and registration
- A Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) and full teacher registration.
- A postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Early Intervention, or the ability to complete it within four years of starting the role.
- Several years of teaching experience.
- A full driver’s licence.
- Willingness to follow the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
Team and organisation
You will be joining Te Mahau | Education Services. This group delivers integrated education services that support education settings, reduce barriers to participation and learning, provide regulatory advice and oversight, and work to improve outcomes for learners across early learning services, schools, and kura.
Key priorities of the group
- Practice and guidance to improve national coordination and consistency while supporting regional flexibility.
- Integrated delivery of support services directly into education settings, including intervention where required and management of key stakeholder relationships.
- Monitoring and improvement to raise the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity of services related to achievement, progression, attendance, and participation.
Pay and employment details
This is a permanent, full-time role based in Christchurch, New Zealand. The salary range is NZD 69,966 to NZD 106,016 per year, plus KiwiSaver. The final salary will depend on the selected candidate’s skills and experience.
