About the company
Hiko Power Engineering Limited has supported New Zealand’s electrical sector since 1938, supplying equipment, components, and tools for power applications. The business works closely with customers and overseas suppliers to provide dependable products and solutions for electricity networks across the country. Its Auckland and Christchurch teams include qualified electrical engineers, operations specialists, registered electricians, and test technicians. Backed by strong engineering knowledge and practical application experience, Hiko provides technical guidance, training, installation, certification services, and manufacturer-backed extended warranties focused on reliability and long-term value.
Role overview
The Design Estimator will prepare precise, professional quotations and technical designs for low-voltage distribution network products. The role works with Distribution Network Operators, service providers, and internal Sales, Manufacturing, and Engineering teams to turn RFQs and specifications into fully costed solutions. This includes producing electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, and Bills of Materials. It is a highly client-facing position with regular interaction with customers, DNOs, and suppliers, as well as involvement in product demonstrations, training, exhibitions, and trade events.
Key responsibilities
- Develop quotations and design proposals, spending most of the time on quote creation and related design work.
- Convert customer RFQs and technical specifications into accurate, commercially sound solutions.
- Prepare electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, and detailed bills of materials.
- Improve outcomes through smart costing, optimisation, and practical design decisions.
- Ensure designs and quotations align with relevant industry, compliance, and network standards.
- Work with clients, stakeholders, and suppliers to clarify needs and provide technical input.
- Support the sales team with existing accounts and new business opportunities at the application level.
- Build strong working relationships with engineers, designers, estimators, project managers, operations managers, installers, and maintenance staff.
- Communicate Hiko’s value proposition around reliability, certainty, and long-term value.
- Represent the company professionally at meetings, site visits, demonstrations, training sessions, exhibitions, and trade events.
- Maintain effective teamwork across internal departments and contribute proactively to business opportunities.
- Complete required administrative tasks, reporting, and documentation accurately and on time.
- Follow safe work practices and ensure health and safety considerations are built into all activities.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate will have electrical engineering experience in customer-facing B2B roles such as electrical design, design estimating, product support, product management, service, or field operations, preferably within the New Zealand low-voltage distribution network environment or with suppliers serving that sector. A degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technician training is preferred, though equivalent industry experience will also be considered. Manufacturing experience is an advantage.
You should be able to build and sustain long-term relationships with customers throughout New Zealand and suppliers in Australia and Europe. The role suits someone who is resourceful, self-driven, highly organised, and accountable, with strong attention to detail and the ability to work comfortably in situations with complexity and some ambiguity. A professional manner, clear communication style, and responsiveness to customer needs are essential. Proficiency with MS Office is required, and CAD design skills would be beneficial.
Eligibility
Applicants must already have the legal right to work in New Zealand.
