Deputy Sheriff

Position Overview

The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office is inviting applications for the role of Deputy Sheriff. Both candidates with prior law enforcement experience and fresh recruits are encouraged to apply for enrollment in the upcoming training academy. Salary offers depend on qualifications, starting at $56,741 for recruits, with higher pay for those possessing previous police, sheriff, jailor, corrections officer certifications, or related military security experience.

Minimum Qualifications

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old if currently active military, Reserve, or Guard; otherwise, a minimum of 20 years is required.
• A high school diploma or GED is mandatory.
• Valid driver's license and a clean driving record per Virginia DMV standards (no more than six demerit points in 24 months or one major violation in 36 months).
• U.S. citizenship is required, or lawful U.S. residency for the past 10 consecutive years with eligibility to meet CJIS security clearance.
• Capability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Employment Conditions and Certifications

• Must pass a thorough criminal background check, including FBI review and polygraph exam.
• Pre-employment drug screening is mandatory, and the role is subject to random drug and alcohol testing; medical marijuana use is forbidden.
• Candidates must successfully complete physical agility, psychological, medical exams, and panel interviews.
• This is a Critical Safety Sensitive position requiring working in high-security areas following DOJ's CJIS policies.

Job Duties

• Ensure safety and secure surroundings for staff, visitors, detainees at courts, jails, and related county facilities/events.
• Enforce Virginia felony and misdemeanor laws, serve legal documents, and transport inmates between facilities both in- and out-of-state.
• Maintain firearm proficiency, defensive tactics, and vehicle operation skills.
• Investigate jail and courthouse criminal incidents and provide emergency operational support during crises.
• Support the Chesterfield Police Department during disasters, mass arrests, or emergencies by acting as a law enforcement force multiplier.
• Enforce state and local laws and offer certified search and rescue assistance statewide when requested.
• Carry out other assigned responsibilities as required.

• The position requires permanent 12-hour shifts including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
