About the Role
Hartree Partners invites applications for a Compliance Officer position based in London, UK, to support the company’s EMEA operations, particularly focusing on global agricultural commodity trading. This role offers a unique chance to deliver ongoing compliance training and collaborate with multiple departments in the rollout of compliance initiatives. The role demands independent judgment, integrity, and the ability to take objective stances—even when they conflict with short-term commercial goals. The position involves close interaction with senior traders and requires transparent communication of any concerns.

Responsibilities
- Execute and maintain Hartree Partner’s compliance program across the business.
- Conduct risk assessments to highlight compliance risks and implement necessary mitigations.
- Ensure adherence to internal policies and international regulations.
- Monitor communications to confirm compliance with laws and policies.
- Provide frequent compliance guidance, especially related to high-risk trading activities.
- Deliver ongoing compliance training on internal policies and external legal frameworks.
- Incorporate compliance considerations into decision-making processes, including presenting dissenting opinions as necessary.
- Assist the centralized compliance team with counterparty Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures, particularly sanction risk management in key markets.
- Identify compliance issues, report them to the Chief Compliance Officer, and assist in resolution efforts.
- Review marketing materials and external communications for regulatory compliance.
- Support fraud investigations in collaboration with legal and internal audit teams of Touton and ED&F Man.
- Manage whistleblowing systems and related investigations.
- Drive various compliance projects within the organization.
- Maintain close engagement with trading and leadership teams to keep compliance a priority.
- Provide compliance advice related to both physical and financial trading activities.
- Oversee onboarding and approval processes for counterparties under KYC standards.
- Advise on and monitor adherence to policies and regulations including MiFID, REMIT, EMIR, MAR, and Dodd-Frank.
- Monitor market abuse, antitrust, and sanctions compliance.
- Oversee OTC and exchange trading activities to ensure conformity with regulations.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Fluency in English is mandatory; fluency in French or Arabic is highly advantageous.
- Substantial direct compliance experience within a physical commodities trading environment.
- Experience handling trade compliance in emerging markets, especially West Africa and the Middle East, is desirable.
- Knowledge of multiple international compliance frameworks including UK, US, EU, Swiss, and French regulations applicable to commodity trading.
- Experience providing compliance advice to traders.
- Educational background in law or economics is beneficial.
- Proven track record in developing compliance programs and monitoring their effectiveness.
- Excellent communication and ability to establish strong relationships.
- High ethical standards combined with leadership and decision-making capabilities.
- Strong critical thinking and rapid problem-solving skills.
