Job description
Position Overview
Norwich City Council is seeking a dedicated Caretaker to join its established Caretaking team servicing the housing stock. The role involves ensuring the cleanliness, maintenance, safety, security, and monitoring of communal areas, alongside providing support and guidance to tenants.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain productive relationships with tenants and the public; offer advice on the use of equipment and services.
- Implement and promote the Council's equal opportunities policies in both employment and service delivery.
- Attend meetings during evenings and days as required.
- Engage in personal and team development through training and meetings.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy environment by conducting estate inspections and completing minor repairs in communal areas.
- Perform cleaning tasks compliant with British Industrial Cleaning Science (BICS) standards, including steam cleaning communal spaces.
- Adhere to all Council health and safety policies and procedures.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, maintaining security of premises and assets.
- Program electronic key fobs and log all incidents or emergencies in diaries and computer systems.
- Supervise and record maintenance and cleaning work by contractors.
- Maintain computer records, databases, and incident reports accurately.
Required Skills and Experience
- Ability to perform manual tasks and follow established policies and procedures.
- Active contribution to the Neighbourhood Service Team’s efforts.
- Comfortable working on step ladders or steps.
- Effective verbal communication with tenants.
- Proficiency in numeracy and literacy.
- Capability to build trusting and motivating relationships with managers, staff, and residents.
- Flexible and adaptable to meet service needs, including attendance at meetings outside regular hours.
- Experience with industrial-grade cleaning, steam cleaners, high/low speed polishers, and wet/dry VAX machines.
- Knowledge of building maintenance and caretaking duties.
- Strong customer service aptitude and interpersonal skills to resolve resident concerns.
- Basic computer literacy.
Education and Qualifications
- Full driving license is required.
- Certification from the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) is expected.
- Knowledge of COSHH, with full training provided.
