About the Role and Organization

Serving both the Royal Derby Hospital and Chesterfield Royal Hospital pathology departments, Derbyshire Pathology is governed by a unified clinical management team. Position Overview

We are seeking a Specialist Biomedical Scientist for the Histopathology department who is proactive, self-driven, and enthusiastic, equipped with outstanding communication and organizational abilities. This role offers an excellent opportunity to broaden expertise in Histology, including A-C category tissue dissection, as well as gain experience in digital pathology within a service that operates Monday through Saturday.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory activities efficiently, including specimen dissection on tissue categories A to C in collaboration with lead biomedical scientists and histopathologists.
  • Demonstrate competency in routine histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC), special staining methods, microscopy quality control, and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Become familiar with automated IHC equipment, digital pathology, and molecular techniques, as diverse platforms are utilized within the department.
  • Participate actively in auditing the technical quality of laboratory output.
  • Support direct supervision of non-state registered personnel.
  • Contribute to educating and training associate practitioners and medical laboratory assistants to uphold professional and scientific standards.
  • Assist the Histology Manager by rotating leadership roles within routine laboratory functions.
  • Acquire understanding of ISO 15189 accreditation standards, health and safety protocols, auditing practices, and training methodologies.
