Role Overview
This position is for a phlebotomist who can collect blood and other laboratory specimens carefully, accurately, and with a patient-first approach. The role also covers correct patient identification, specimen labeling, documentation, infection prevention, and prompt transfer of samples for testing.
Core Duties
- Draw blood through venipuncture and capillary collection methods by following established procedures.
- Confirm patient identity using approved verification steps before collecting any sample.
- Walk patients through the collection process in a clear and reassuring manner to gain their cooperation.
- Apply labels to specimens immediately and with complete accuracy at the point of collection.
- Handle, store, and move samples in the correct manner to preserve quality and integrity.
- Use aseptic practices consistently and comply with infection control and biomedical waste disposal rules.
- Observe patients for reactions such as dizziness or fainting during or after the procedure.
- Keep the sample collection area clean, organized, and ready for use.
- Enter collection details in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) or in manual registers as required.
- Work with laboratory colleagues to manage urgent STAT samples.
- Make sure samples are sent to the processing lab without delay.
- Track phlebotomy supplies and notify the team when items need replenishment.
- Adhere to NABL, ISO, and internal quality requirements.
- Respect patient privacy and maintain professional behavior at all times.
- Take part in quality improvement efforts, internal reviews, and training sessions.
Skills Needed
- Strong blood collection and venipuncture ability.
- Comfortable handling patients and communicating clearly.
- Understanding of infection prevention and biomedical waste practices.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with LIS tools.
- Ability to stay effective in busy, high-volume settings.
Qualification
Suitable candidates should have DMLT / BMLT or a certificate in phlebotomy from a recognized institute. Registration with the applicable authority is required where relevant.
Experience
Candidates with around 1 year of experience may apply as trainee or junior phlebotomists. Those with 1 to 3 years of experience handling independent blood collection in diagnostic centres or hospitals are also suitable. Prior work with pediatric, geriatric, or difficult venous access cases is an advantage.
