Technician in Science

About the role

Te Aka Mātuatua School of Science is looking for a practical, hands-on technician to support teaching and learning within a collaborative technical team. The role focuses on keeping laboratories safe, orderly, and ready for use, while contributing to an efficient teaching environment.

Core work includes laboratory cleaning, washing glassware, managing waste, monitoring stock, and helping maintain laboratory spaces and equipment. You will also support teaching-related technical tasks and provide back-up assistance to the Science Store, including receiving, storing, issuing, and tracking laboratory consumables, equipment, and teaching materials.

This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours per week, based at Hillcrest Campus in Hamilton.

The salary range for the role is NZD 60,046 to NZD 72,636 per year, depending on the skills, knowledge, and experience you bring.

The School of Science is part of a broader STEM division that includes Science, Engineering, and Computing and Mathematical Sciences. The school is research-led and supports a wide range of science disciplines, with a strong focus on contributing to solutions for major challenges in Aotearoa and beyond.

What you will be doing

• Helping to deliver high-quality teaching support in science laboratories.
• Keeping laboratories clean, safe, and functional.
• Washing glassware and handling laboratory waste appropriately.
• Managing stock levels and supporting laboratory facilities and equipment upkeep.
• Assisting with teaching-related technical work.
• Supporting the Science Store with receiving, storage, distribution, and inventory control.
• Working closely with a skilled technical team in a flexible, cooperative environment.

What we are looking for

You should bring either a science qualification or relevant experience in a laboratory or scientific setting. Strong communication and ICT skills are important, along with a solid understanding of health and safety practices. Experience using or maintaining laboratory equipment will help you succeed in the role.

We are seeking someone who is organised, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a customer-focused, practical environment. You should be proactive, adaptable, willing to learn, and able to work well as part of a team that supports staff and students.

Experience with physical containment facilities or autoclaves would be an advantage.
